Running Economy
Discover how your shoes impact your performance
Service Description
Find the shoe that truly saves you energy. We measure the oxygen cost of running (how much O₂ you use at a set pace) and muscle oxygenation across up to three pairs of shoes at different intensities. Lower oxygen cost = cheaper effort = more speed or distance for the same work, with less fatigue. SENSORS VO₂Master - Oxygen uptake & ventilation to quantify economy (ml O₂·kg⁻¹·km⁻¹) Train.Red - Local muscle O₂ to see which shoe keeps muscles better oxygenated Heart-Rate Monitor - Internal load at each pace (easy tie-breaker when VO₂ is close) CORE Body Temp - Heat strain and drift differences between models THE TEST A controlled treadmill session (or suitable mobile setup) with 2–3 minute stages per shoe at one or two fixed paces. Between stages we switch shoes and repeat You’ll leave with: 1) A clear economy ranking of your shoes at set pace(s) 2) The best shoe for race day vs. everyday training (and why) 3) HR and SmO₂ insights that explain comfort/fatigue differences 4) Practical cues to improve stride economy (cadence/posture suggestions) 5) Guidance on when to rotate each shoe to reduce injury risk 6) Reports on each of the tests conducted as well as the full raw data from each shoe tested. PREPERATION Bring up to three clean pairs of running shoes and your usual socks. Avoid heavy meals or caffeine for ~3 hours, hydrate well, and arrive warmed up or ready for a short warm-up. For mobile testing, ensure space is clear/safe, power and Wi-Fi/mobile signal are available, and a treadmill is set up (we can assist—request via the booking form). Re-test when you change shoes or ahead of key races to keep your choice dialled.
